Statement of the Government Peace Panel and the GPH ceasefire mechanism on the passing of Mr. Rasid Ladiasan

The GPH Negotiating Panel in talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the GPH ‎Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of Mr. Rasid Ladiasan, who passed away on 11 May 2016 after a protracted, painful bout with lung cancer.

We are deeply saddened by Mr. Ladiasan's untimely demise. He served the MILF's Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities beginning in 2004, formerly its head of Secretariat and eventually its chair. He was at the forefront of  keeping the peace on the ground which led to an unprecedented record of zero skirmishes between government and MILF troops from 2012 to 2015, broken only by the tragic Mamasapano incident.

At the height of the Mamasapano encounter, he and  then MILF ceasefire secretariat head (now the MILF-CCCH chair) Butch Malang,  were instrumental in mobilizing MILF commanders on the ground to restore the ceasefire, extricate the fallen and return  the weapons and belongings of SAF troopers seized during the fighting. He was an important figure in defusing tensions, preventing the escalation of violence and even in the settlement of clan conflicts or ridos during his term as MILF ceasefire head.

He will be fondly remembered for his courage when he braved the Senate hearings ‎on Mamasapano as the representative of the MILF -- the first time that a rebel organization participated in a Congressional investigation -- until the arrival of MILF peace panel chair Mr. Mohagher Iqbal who had to cut short his participation in United Kingdom's Wilton Park-organized conference in Indonesia.

‎Mr. Ladiasan is survived by his wife, Zuhaira, four small children between the ages of 11 and 5 and parents. In accordance with Islamic practice, he will be buried today, within 24 hours of his passing.

‎It is an honor for us to have worked with Mr. Ladiasan, a soft-spoken and principled man who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of peace for the sake of the Bangsamoro communities. He will forever be missed.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. (We surely belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.)
