Cordillera Peace Advocates Urge CPP-NPA-NDF to Declare a Reciprocal Unilateral Ceasefire

President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration of unilateral ceasefire gave us hope that the longstanding armed conflict between the Government and the National Democratic Front (NDF) is finally nearing its end. However, the violent clash in Davao del Norte last Wednesday involving government troops and the New People’s Army (NPA) has heightened tensions that threaten to delay once again the formal resumption of the GRP-NDF peace negotiations.

The Cordillera Peace Network urges both parties to earnestly go back to the negotiating table and forge a political settlement that will pave the way for permanent cessation of hostilities and finally bring about a just and lasting peace.

We urge the NDF to respond to President Duterte’s act of good will by declaring its own unilateral ceasefire thus preventing violent clashes from occuring on the ground while both parties hammer out the substantive issues at the negotiating table. We likewise urge the Government of the Philippines to keep to the path of peace. We encourage all sectors, stateholders and communities to find ways to participate in the peace process so that peoples’ concerns are heard and addressed. We long for a just and durable peace. It is almost within our grasp. Let us not let it slip away again.
